The conspiracy theory I chose for this week’s research is the death of Jeffrey Epstein. For a conspiracy to hold its title, it must involve two or more people, some secret action, and a motive, as explained by Karen Douglas in a LiveScience article. However, they also often have an extra element: an exciting, new explanation or belief. I’ve heard the phrase “Epstein didn’t kill himself” more times than I can count. So, I thought, why not explore it?

On August 10, 2019, at 6:30 am, inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City (NYC), Jeffrey Epstein, an inmate, was found dead (Wikipedia). Epstein was a prominent figure in the American business world and was a convicted sex offender and alleged trafficker.

In a previous incident months before he died, on July 23, 2019, Epstein was found with injuries to his neck, semiconscious inside his cell (Wikipedia). His cellmate was cleared by the prison of any involvement in Epstein’s injuries, but their origins remain contested. 

When he was found dead on August 10, he was allegedly hanging off the side of his bed with neck injuries similar to the ones he had in the first incident. Epstein was found in his jail cell, where he was held while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges, and was pronounced dead at 6:39 am at the New York Downtown Hospital.

What Is Believed?

Conspiracy theorists believe that “Epstein didn’t kill himself” (Wikipedia 2). Many posit that he was, in fact, murdered in his jail cell that night, or his death was faked entirely. These theories are supported by the fact that normal jail procedures were not followed on the night of his death (Wikipedia). Jail protocol was violated when Epstein’s body was not photographed as it was found, was removed from his cell without any investigation, and two cameras outside of his cell malfunctioned (as well as an additional one producing “unusable” footage) at a pivotal time that night. The cameras’ malfunctioning led to the loss of an entire minute of footage, which is uncharacteristic for this jail, according to a former inmate.

Additionally, the manner of Epstein’s death contradicts commonly held logic: how could a nearly 6-foot-tall, 185-pound man hang himself from the bottom bunk? Various autopsies and medical investigations dispute the cause of his death, whether his injuries indicate murder or suicide, why Epstein chose to allegedly use a bedsheet and not wires or tubing, and why some of the other details in this case don’t line up (Wikipedia).

Not only that, but Epstein was supposed to be watched every 30 minutes each night (Wikipedia). Somehow, on the night of his death, both guards on duty so happened to fall asleep at their desks, miss about three hours of check-ins, and falsify records so no one knew. 

People have many varying theories about how, why, or if Epstein died (Wikipedia 2). It is generally agreed upon by theory supporters that he was murdered by strangulation. Theorists hypothesize that his murder was ordered by Epstein’s co-offenders so they could avoid prosecution or public knowledge of their crimes. Some theories assert that Epstein had a client list or “black book” with the names of high-profile sex criminals recorded for blackmail.

How It Evolved?

The Department of Justice (DoJ) released an official statement about Epstein’s death in August 2019, and the NYC medical examiner declared it had been a suicide by hanging (Wikipedia 2). Epstein’s lawyers decided to investigate for themselves and announced that the autopsy allegedly evidenced homicidal strangulation, not suicidal hanging. The guards on duty the night he died were charged with falsifying records and engaging in conspiracy, confirming this theory. 

Prior to his death, Epstein also allegedly claimed to have information on influential figures, so doubts began to rise about his alleged suicide (Wikipedia 2). The discrepancies/apparent editing in video footage released by the DoJ fueled this disbelief. Why could the government possess an uncut version of this video, but the general public could not? Why would the FBI release “raw footage” and cut out a full minute?

More people continued to doubt Epstein’s alleged suicide. As a result, the phrase “Epstein didn't kill himself” was popularized on social media and in real-world conversations (Wikipedia 2).

Who Believes?

Many people believe that Epstein’s death was faked or that he was murdered. One poll suggests that 45% of Americans believe he was murdered, whereas only 16% believe he committed suicide, and 39% are unsure (Wikipedia). 

Numerous prominent political figures, even Epstein’s attorney, continued to doubt the alleged suicide. Epstein’s own brother indicated there was nothing wrong with him before he died—he literally had a bail hearing coming up!

Some more prominent figures with assumptions and opinions on Epstein’s death include Bill de Blasio, the mayor of NYC at the time, who said that “It just doesn't make sense that the highest-profile prisoner in America—you know, someone forgot to guard him” (Wikipedia 2).

How Is It Spread?

One of the ways that the theory of Epstein’s death circulates is through the popular internet meme phrase, “Epstein didn't kill himself” (Wikipedia 2). Though many disagree on the circumstances around his death, this phrase has united people online for years. The phrase gained popularity with a wide audience in November 2019, and generally, its supporters argue that homicide was the cause of Epstein’s death.

This internet meme is also often used to go against people with whom the speaker disagrees politically. For example, many Republicans believe that Hillary Clinton arranged his death, whereas many Democratic circles allege that Donald Trump did it. The fact that Trump had a personal relationship with Epstein and Clinton was connected to Epstein through her husband, Bill Clinton, continues to strengthen this movement.

This phrase draws a wide audience. It’s actually how I heard about Epstein’s death, too.
